<text>Stuart McPhail Hall, Jamaican-born British cultural theorist and academic (born Feb. 3, 1932, Kingston, Jamaica — died Feb. 10, 2014, London, England), was a pioneer in the field of cultural studies, an interdisciplinary approach to the role of social institutions in the shaping of culture and “the networks of meanings which individuals and groups use to make sense of and communicate with one another.”
Hall attained international stature in 1979 when he coined the term “Thatcherism” to describe the phenomenon of the broad (and ultimately long-lasting) political, economic, and cultural changes that would eventually be wrought by incoming Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her conservative supporters.
He later chastised leftist thinkers and politicians for underestimating Thatcherism’s enduring popularity among disillusioned working-class people and for failing to counter the harshest elements of Thatcherism with a compelling alternative that would promote multiculturalism, environmentalism, and civil rights. </text>
