The Giant Land Snail, Megalobulimus oblongus. A species of air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Strophocheilidae. Native to a large part of the neotropical world including Argentina, Brazil, Columbia and Uruguay. They have spread however to various parts of the Caribbean including Jamaica, Martinique, Barbados and the Lesser Antilles and can live up to 14 years. Part of the collection of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society. The Barbados Museum and Historical Society (BMHS) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization with a membership of over 1,000 individuals and companies. The Barbados Museum and Historical Society is housed in historic buildings which were originally used as the military prison at St. Ann’s Garrison.
